2. Concepts Related to Parallelism and Application Scaling

  • Vectorisation, threading, message passing
  • Strong scaling and weak scaling

3. Hardware Overview

  • CPU and memory hierarchy
  • General-purpose GPU (GPGPU)

4. Compilers and Libraries

  • Available compilers and performance libraries
  • Common compiler options

5. Introduction to Parallel Filesystems

  • Overview of GPFS and Lustre
  • Relative performance characteristics

6. Tuning of MPI Applications with CRAY MPICH

7. Arithmetic Intensity and the Roofline Model

8. Processes and Threads Affinity

Prerequisites:

1. A valid user account on the NSCC ASPIRE 2A system
2. A laptop for use during hands-on sessions
3. Users are expected to have attended the ASPIRE 2A Introductory Workshop and be familiar with its topics (e.g., connecting to the system, editing files in Linux, and submitting jobs)

Expected outcome:

After completing this course, the user should have a basic understanding of the factors which limit the performance of compute-intensive applications and knowledge of the techniques which can be used to improve that performance.
